VCE Ancient History — Unit 2

Pharaohs of Egypt — Flashcards & Quiz

VCE Ancient History Unit 2 Egypt explores the role of pharaohs in maintaining order (Ma'at) through religion, building programs, military campaigns and administration. You need to describe the evolution of kingship from the Old Kingdom through the Middle and New Kingdoms, and analyse key rulers (Khufu, Hatshepsut, Thutmose III, Akhenaten, Ramesses II) with attention to their sources and legacies.

Key Points

  • The pharaoh was considered a living god, the earthly embodiment of Horus and after death of Osiris.
  • Ma'at: the cosmic order, truth and justice that the pharaoh was responsible for maintaining.
  • Old Kingdom (c. 2686–2181 BCE): pyramid-building pharaohs like Khufu. Divine kingship at its most absolute.
  • Middle Kingdom (c. 2055–1650 BCE): rulers rebuilt central authority after the First Intermediate Period; emphasised justice and bureaucracy.
  • New Kingdom (c. 1550–1069 BCE): empire-building. Hatshepsut (trade and temple building), Thutmose III (military conquest), Akhenaten (monotheistic revolution), Ramesses II (long reign, Kadesh battle, monuments).
  • Sources: monumental inscriptions, tomb art, papyri (Westcar, Ebers), and later Greek historians (Herodotus) — each with limitations.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Treating all pharaohs as the same — Egyptian kingship evolved significantly over 3000 years.
  2. Claiming Akhenaten was universally revered — his monotheism was reversed by his successors.
  3. Confusing Hatshepsut (female pharaoh) with her stepson Thutmose III.
  4. Forgetting Ma'at as the central religious-political concept.
  5. Missing source limitations: monumental inscriptions were propaganda, tomb art idealised.

Exam Strategy

VCAA Unit 2 Egypt questions ask you to describe aspects of kingship or analyse specific pharaohs. Method: (1) identify the kingdom period and ruler, (2) describe key actions and policies, (3) cite specific sources, (4) evaluate sources for bias (monumental propaganda vs private tombs), (5) assess the ruler's historical legacy.

Revision Tip

Pharaoh-specific knowledge is classic flashcard content — drill a Revizi deck with 6–8 key pharaohs and their signature actions.
