What the markers wanted

School Curriculum and Standards Authority publishes examination reports after each paper. This is our reading of the 2022–2025 feedback, in our words, grouped by unit and cited to the year and question it was seen in. It describes what markers rewarded in papers already sat; it does not predict the next one. The originals are linked below.

Across the paper

  • Use formal scientific vocabulary throughout: write 'increasing' or 'decreasing' rather than arrows, and attach a unit to every measurement or quantity you report.
  • Be exact about what you refer to. Name the control or treatment group when describing results, and keep the critical words: mutations arise from errors in cell division, not from division itself.
  • Obey the command verb and the mark allocation. 'Compare' means weighing similarities and differences systematically; 'discuss' means raising the issues and arguing for and against.
  • Answer the question actually set. Watch for subtle parts and key words (a question on structural features wants structure, not function), and never restate the question as your answer.
  • When a range is requested give the minimum and the maximum, not the gap between them; when several distinct features are requested, make each one genuinely different.
  • Graphs need a title naming the variables and axes that use most of the grid, broken where appropriate; diagrams need labels and enough annotation to be understood on their own.
  • Choose the Section Three question you know best, plan it before writing, organise it under headings, then re-read to check it makes sense to a marker and is legible.
  • Recall and data questions go well every year while explanations fall short: learn each syllabus point deeply enough to explain it, and skip topics removed from the syllabus such as epigenetics.

Better responses

  • Working out the probability of an offspring phenotype from a parental cross was among the highest-scoring multiple-choice items of 2023.
  • A question on the structure of DNA was the best-answered multiple-choice item of 2024.

Where marks were lost — and how to keep them

  • Telling binary fission from mitosis was the weakest multiple-choice item of 2024; many candidates wrongly believed homologous chromosomes pair during mitosis, a misconception the panel asks teachers to target.
  • A change in the number of fossil families over time is macroevolution, not microevolution; many candidates confused the two in 2024 and the panel still lists the distinction as a weak point.
  • Natural selection changes the genetic make-up of a population, not of an individual organism; a 2025 multiple-choice item on this caught many candidates out.
  • Keep 'allele' and 'gene' distinct, and write co-dominant or incompletely dominant alleles with one base letter and distinguishing superscripts rather than two unrelated symbols.
  • Biotechnology is examined by application: know what PCR, gel electrophoresis, sequencing and restriction enzymes are used for rather than the fine mechanics of each method.
  • Give in-depth accounts of how life diversified over time and the evidence for evolution; with meiosis, polygenic inheritance and gene flow, these are the topics the panel says answers run shallow on.

Better responses

  • The Unit 4 extended answers were the stronger half of Section Three in 2024; the panel noted candidates found them less demanding than the Unit 3 options.
  • The Unit 4 extended question fewer candidates chose in 2022 was answered far better than the popular one; the panel urged weighing your own knowledge before committing.

Where marks were lost — and how to keep them

  • Identifying a disease-management measure that breaks a pathogen's life cycle proved one of the more demanding multiple-choice items of 2022.
  • Say a disease is caused by a bacterium, never that it is one: the panel singled out exactly this slip about tuberculosis in 2023.
  • Use the syllabus definition of a zoonosis, a disease that can pass between vertebrate species, rather than a looser version from other sources.
  • Check the basic classification of the organism before explaining its temperature regulation; in 2023 the panel asked teachers to revisit which animals are endotherms and which are ectotherms.
  • Even in 2024, when Unit 4 was the best-handled part of Section Three, no candidate earned full marks on its extended answer: cover every detail the mark allocation implies.
