It describes what markers rewarded in papers already sat; it does not predict the next one. The originals are linked below.

Across the paper

  • Choose an extended-answer option on the whole question rather than one part of it: SCSA advises reading both options through, since a question with one forbidding part can still be the more accessible overall
  • Match the depth of an answer to the command verb, because naming or identifying a structure is not the same task as describing or explaining a process, and SCSA points candidates to its glossary of key words

Better responses

  • Homeostasis answers scored best when the whole negative feedback loop was traced: the stimulus, the receptor, the gland and its hormone, the effector, and the corrective change that restores the set point
  • Reflex arc work was the most successful short answer of 2024 where each component was named in order and the synapse was handled as a step in its own right rather than folded into the neurone
  • Endocrine answers gained marks by separating the gland that secretes a hormone from the target cells it acts on, then saying what those target cells actually do in response
  • Regulation answers read far more precisely with directional wording, stating that a level rises or falls and by what mechanism, instead of saying that a hormone affects or changes it
  • Annotated diagrams, flow charts and tables kept extended answers on the endocrine and nervous systems clear and easy for markers to follow, a point SCSA repeats in every year on file

Where marks were lost — and how to keep them

  • Raising blood glucose through the adrenal glands was answered much less well than the pancreatic and liver route in the 2023 extended answers, so the hormone and its effect on the liver both need stating
  • Disease and immunity was the hardest short answer in 2023 and again in 2024, with the named gaps being how one antibody is specific to a single antigen and how vaccination leaves lasting immunity
  • Water and salt balance needs its two hormones kept apart: what aldosterone does to sodium reabsorption, and how the hypothalamus governs the release of ADH and so the concentration of urine
  • Structural detail of neural pathways, and saying which part of a reflex arc a labelled structure belongs to, were weak in 2024 and again in the 2025 multiple-choice
  • Fever was listed as poorly handled in 2025; the marks sit in the sequence of events that raises the set point and in its role in defence, not in restating it as a high temperature
  • The first line of defence was a 2025 weakness: physical, chemical and microbial barriers act against pathogens in general and should not be described as targeting one named pathogen

Better responses

  • Setting out how bipedalism helped hominins survive was among the most accessible work of 2023, and the 2025 multiple-choice confirmed that skeletal adaptations for upright walking are well known
  • Hominin answers were strongest when a named feature carried the identification, such as cranial capacity, brow ridge, jaw shape or the tool culture linked to that species, rather than a general description
  • The 2023 short answer applying scientific method to hominin skulls was the best answered in its section, rewarding a testable hypothesis, controlled variables and one consistent way of measuring
  • Graphs earn their marks from an even scale on every axis, axes labelled with units, and points plotted from the data supplied, which SCSA asked teachers to reinforce after 2025
  • Defining a dating term by its process, such as a parent isotope decaying to a daughter isotope at a known half-life, avoids the circular definitions SCSA singled out in 2025
  • Fossil questions went well where candidates said which method gives an age in years and which gives only an order, with layer position in strata used for the second

Where marks were lost — and how to keep them

  • Applying selection to an unfamiliar scenario was flagged in 2023 and 2024: name the pressure, the variation it acts on and the resulting change in allele frequency, including where a harmful allele persists
  • Gene pool mechanisms were confused in 2025, so keep gene flow, which moves alleles between populations, apart from drift and the founder effect, which are chance effects and are not speciation themselves
  • Reading a phylogenetic tree means justifying a relationship from branch points and shared ancestors; explaining relatedness from a tree was listed as poorly done in both 2023 and 2024
  • Dating needs the mechanism as well as the arithmetic: where the carbon-14 in a specimen came from, when potassium-argon is used instead, and how to work through successive half-lives
  • Biochemical evidence was named twice in the 2025 list, and comparisons of proteins or amino acid sequences only earn marks once the answer says what a similarity implies about shared ancestry
  • Biotechnology answers lost marks on interpretation rather than recall: what a banding pattern from PCR and gel electrophoresis shows about a variant, and where recombinant DNA ends and gene therapy begins
